The best birthday bingo is not about today's hits but about the music the birthday person grew up with. Musical memory is strongest for the songs of your teens and early twenties; pick that period and the birthday person recognises everything, while the stories follow by themselves.

Turning 40? Then the youth hits of the late nineties and the noughties are the core of your list. For a 50th birthday take the eighties and early nineties, for a 60th the seventies and eighties, and for a 30th the noughties and tens. The rule of thumb: the music from when the birthday person was between 10 and 25.

Keep the guests in mind

Ages vary at a birthday party. Build about two thirds of the list around the birthday person's decade and fill the rest with broad hits every generation knows. That keeps grandad in the game without the night losing its theme.

Make it personal

Add songs only this group understands: the wedding song, the holiday hit of the group of friends or the birthday person's guilty pleasure. Is the birthday person a superfan of one artist? Consider an artist bingo as an extra round.

How a music bingo evening runs

Traditional bingo leans on numbers; this game leans on songs, and that one twist is what makes it fun. There is no number to find: people listen to the opening seconds, recognise the hit and players mark it off. You do not need a professional host or a trivia round to warm the room up, because the music takes care of that. Most people know far more songs than they think.

Settle first on what the evening should be. A short game of three rounds is perfect before dinner; a complete night of 90 minutes suits a party, a company event or a musical theme night. Whether your crowd grew up on the 90s or on last summer's charts, use their own music instead of a generic list: the best selection is the one where every player recognises something — a classic, a guilty pleasure, a recent hit. That is what gets people out of their seats.
